A Letter from the Future

A letter to myself as a young mom:

“You are embarking on the best years of your life. In fact, there’s nothing in the world that will bring you greater joy than raising these little boys. Your favorite part of every day, every week, every year will be the times spent feeding them, chasing them, tickling them, reading to them, teaching them, playing games with them, snuggling them, and watching their ball games.  You’ll love the way they look at you. How they love you and want to protect you. How you are the most important person in their lives. Your best memories in life will be of cold mornings in the classroom, vacations when they saw beautiful things for the first time, and summers spent at the pool or perusing garage sales.”

“It will seem busy and overwhelming and sometimes downright crazy, but don’t take it lightly when people say ‘Enjoy. It goes fast!’ because I’ll tell you what they mean by that. They mean to say that one day as they are becoming teenagers and looking more like men than like your babies, your heart will ache (your womb will ache) with the knowledge that you can never re-live those years. Each memory was… a once in a lifetime experience. No chance to rewind and do it again. Never again will you have a newborn and a 3 year old. Never again will you have a 6 year old and 3 year old. And never again will they be little boys. Your home videos are all that you have left. Memories. Sweet, sweet memories. You will be full of pride at who they are and who they are becoming, excited to see what their future holds. Yet, you will grieve as you let go of the best years of your life. You will wonder where time went and how you got to this point so fast. You will yearn for time to stand still. However, not only can you not do it over again with them, but also by the time you feel this way, it will be too late to do it again with a new baby. You will be past those years. So stress less, love more, pour yourself into what’s really important. And take lots and lots of videos!”
